Why Dr. Ambis Works Hard to Deliver Painless Root Canal Treatment

Pain control is something Dr. Ambis takes personally. Patients who’ve had root canal treatment at our office consistently mention how comfortable the experience was, even for a procedure they were dreading.

  • “I’ve been a patient for 15+ years and have found Doc Ambis to be the best who has ever treated me. He is quick to respond to an emergency and he pays great attention to pain control, even root canals are tolerable!”Frank Zgola
  • “He has done several root canals with cap and crowns, among other things, and all have been done without pain and seem like the next best thing to the original equipment. He cuts no corners with the service and technology in the office.”Dan C.
  • “Dr. Ambis prides himself on being a ‘painless dentist,’ and he has lived up to this moniker on more than one occasion: when working on a root canal, as well as when extracting a wisdom tooth.”Monika Aliosius

What Is a Root Canal?

Every tooth has a soft inner layer called the pulp, made up of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When decay, a crack, or repeated dental work allow bacteria to reach the pulp, it can become infected and inflamed. This causes pain that ranges from a dull ache to something sharp and constant. Left untreated, that infection can spread and lead to an abscess or eventual tooth loss.

A root canal removes the damaged pulp, cleans out the inside of the tooth, and seals it back up. The goal is to end your pain and save a tooth that would otherwise likely need to be extracted.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

You don’t have to be a dentist to notice these warning signs:

  • Sharp or throbbing tooth pain, especially when biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers well after the temperature is gone
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near one specific tooth
  • A small bump on the gums that looks like a pimple
  • A tooth that’s darkened or changed color

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth getting checked sooner rather than later. Tooth infections don’t resolve on their own, and catching one early usually means a simpler, more comfortable treatment.

What to Expect During Your Root Canal at Ambis Dental

Most root canals are completed in one to two visits, with a typical appointment running about 60–90 minutes. Teeth with more complex root structures, like molars with multiple canals, sometimes need a second visit. Any soreness afterward is usually mild, fades within a few days, and responds well to over-the-counter pain relief.

  1. Numbing: The area is fully numbed before we begin, so most patients feel pressure at most.
  2. Access and Cleaning: A small opening is made in the tooth to reach and carefully remove the infected pulp.
  3. Shaping and Disinfecting: The inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped to prepare it for filling.
  4. Sealing: The space is filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection.
  5. Restoration: Many teeth need a dental crown afterward to protect and strengthen the tooth long-term.

  • Keep up your oral hygiene, brushing and flossing gently around the treated area.
  • Manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as needed.
