Let Dr. Ambis know if you’re experiencing any of the following common signs of periodontitis:
- Bleeding or swollen gums
- Gum recession
- Bad breath
- Heavy tartar buildup
- Tooth mobility
- Sore teeth
- Food getting stuck between teeth
During your exam, we’ll carefully measure the levels of your gums to see where they attach to the tooth surfaces. Deep “pockets” under your gingiva indicate tissue detachment and corresponding bone loss. A set of X-rays will also be needed. If you smoke, you may not see the traditional symptoms of bleeding or swelling.
Ithaca Gum Treatments
The Edward J. Ambis Center for Dental Medicine provides comprehensive periodontal scaling and root planing (“deep cleanings”) to combat the causes of gum disease and prevent additional tissue loss. Adjunctive soft tissue therapies such as locally-placed antibiotics and gum grafting are also available.
We’ll discuss the specifics of your gum treatment once the extent of your infection is determined. If it’s been longer than six months since your last dental checkup, call The Edward J. Ambis Center for Dental Medicine to schedule a periodontal disease screening.
